Diabetes is a ntered disease to human being. People all over the world believe that diabetes is a syndrome caused by lack of insulin or the malfunction of the target cell of insulin which result in the disturbance of metabolism of glucose, protain, ancommonly and frequently encoud lipid. Owing to the prolonged pathologic change of diabetes and improper treatment, it leads into the chronic progressive pathologic changes of many tissues and organs such as the eye, kidney, heart, skin, nerve and blood vessel, etc.
According to the common view of medical scientists all over the world, the reason that causes diabetes is not completely known. Therefore thee is no satisfying medicine to cure the disease up till now. Those west medicines like Sulfurea and Biguanide drugs their series perform well in improving the symptoms but no breakthrough in complete therapy.

It is an everlasting subject for seeking and research the ideal medicine for diabetes. Considering medicine, instructed by the modern west medicine theory, combined with Chinese and west medicine, we created a new method to cure diabetes clinically, and thus invented pure Chinese medicine YU XIAO SAN 8805, YU XIAO SAN 8806 and their series to prevent and cure diabetes.

Since 1984, the study of "Chinese medicine human organic regeneration and rejuvenation" has been started. The primitive test was aiming at diabetics and complication of renal failure. We tried to improve the renal regeneration, but resulted in finding out the miracle that the formula can decrease the blood glucose for diabetes then transferred to the subject of diabetes. Since then, clinical observation and laboratory study from multiangle had been started surrounding the formation and efficiency pancreas, islets of pancreas, and insulin, the formation and efficacy of pancreatic glucagon, and their secretion, transform, efficacy, degradation, regulation etc.

These jobs include: " The decrease of blood glucose test Report of YU XIA SAN 8804 and YU XIAO SAN 8805" provided by Pharmacological Office of Beijing Chinese Medicine Science Study Institute. (See attachment I) " Acute Toxicity test report of YU XIAO SAN 8805" (See attachment II), and other 58 cases small scale clinical application, (See attachment III), and another 100 cases, 500 cases that is big scale clinical observation. (See attachment IV). It was used formally in our hospital and 48 hospitals and scientific institutes all over China in 1987. (See attachment V), until 1995, was used by 200,000 people all over the world. The total efficacy to NIDDM (Non insulin dependent) patients is 85%, and 27% for IDDM (Insulin dependent) patients.

The following is a 10618 case report of diabetics who used YU XIAO SAN 8805 during the period of February 1992 to October 1992.

I. Choosing Cases
1. Diabetics are confirmed diagnosis under the diagnosis standard of diabetes published by WHO.
2. Clinical fasting blood glucose is 7.8 mmol/L (140mg.dl) or above, glucose in urine is positive and with obvious symptoms.
3. Blood glucose could not be controlled within the normal range after using Chinese and west medicine for over 3 months. (equal to term 2)
4. Blood glucose is abnormal for or over 3 months without using any Chinese or west medicine.

II. General Information
Among 10618 cases under investigation and therapy, 5318 cases were provided by our hospital (1268 In-patients' cases, 4050 outpatients' cases), 5300 cases were provided by other corporate medical units.
1. Sex: 5204 males, 5414 females. The ratio between male and female is 1:1.04
2. Age: 1610 cases were under 40 years old, 15.16%: 7116 cases between 40-60 yeas old, 67.02%; 1892 cases over 60 years old, 17.82%.
3. Duration of illness: 2548 cases were between 3 months or more and within one year, 24%; 3398 cases of them were between one to five years, 32%; 2442 cases were between 5 to 10 years, 23%; 2230 cases were over 10 years, 21%.
4. Patient conditions: Fasting blood glucose of 4791 cases were7.8 to 11.1mmol/L (140-200 mg/dl), 42.25%; fasting blood glucose of 1341 cases were 16.7 mmol/L (300mg/dl), 12.63%.
5. The state of using medicine: 1236 cases were confirmed Insulin dependent, which was 11.64% of the total, 136 of them used insulin more than 50 units every day, which was 11% of insulin therapy. 9832 cases were non-insulin dependent, which was 88.36% of the total. 3046 cases had taken sulfarea drugs, which was 28.69% of the total. 2395 cases had taken biguanide drugs, which was 22.56% of the total; 3198 cases had taken both drugs, which was 30.12; 342 cases without taking any drugs. 3.22%; 401 cases had taken other Chinese medicine such as YU QUAN WAN, which was 3.78%.

III. Observation Method
1. Self-comparison method. Observe 2 courses of treatment continuously, each course 2 months.
2. Take YU XIAO SAN 8805, 8 tablets each time, 350mg/tablet, 4 times/day, one hour before dinner and sleep, with water.
3. For patients using of original antihyperglycemic drugs at the beginning of using YU XIAO SAN 8805, there is no dosage change of the insulin injection and oral antihyperglycemic that had already taken. After taking YU XIAO SAN 8805, fasting blood glucose and blood glucose 2 hours after dinner recovered to normal, then start reducing the original drugs (not include YU XIAO SAN) one fourth of daily dosage, step by step per week (reducing the dosage but not the times.) until the zero. As for insulin dependent diabetics, reduced 2 units each time step by step per week, till the zero. If during the reduction of dosage, blood glucose and urine sugar rebounded, just compensated what reduced until the flood glucose and urine sugars reduced to the normal level and continued to reduce the dosage. After taking YU XIAO SAN 8805 exclusively, if the blood glucose test kept normal for the continuous 3 months, YU XIAO SAN 8805 could be stopped.
4. Buns Test, C-Ti, insulin release test, pancreatic glucagon, sacharogenic hemoglobin, renal function, liver function, blood rheology test, fasting blood glucose, blood glucose 2 hours after dinner and urine sugar quantity for 24 hours tested at least once a month before and after taking YU XIAO SAN 8805 for four months.
5. Under the condition of proper diet, moderate exercises, avoiding angry, tiredness and hot, spicy food.

VI. Judgment for treatment result:
A. Clinical Recovery:
1. fasting blood glucose is <6.1mmol/L(110mg/dl), HbAlc<6.8%
2. Blood lipid is normal
3. 24 hour urine sugar quantity is<5g
4. Clinical symptoms are disappeared, complications are healed
5. Insulin units, or oral drugs are stopped taking completely, and maintain over 3 months.

B. Obvious effect:
1. Fasting blood glucose is <7.8mmol/L(140mg.dl), HbAlc<8%
2. Blood lipid is reduced, cholesterol is <5.96mmol/L(230mg/dl) triglyceride <1.47mmol/L(130mg/dl)
3. 24 hour urine sugar fixed quantity is <10g
4. Clinical symptoms and complications obviously reduced.
5. Insulin or oral drugs partially are stopped taking.

C. Effect:
1. fasting glucose low 3.33mmol/L(60mg/dl), HbAlc<9%
2. Blood lipid is reduced, cholesterol<6.48mmol/L (250mg/dl), triglyceride< 1.70mmol/L (150mg/dl)
3. Clinical symptoms and complications abate, or no development.
4. 24 hour urine sugar quantity is < 15g
5. No decrease of insulin units or oral drugs.

D. No Effect: All indexes have no inclination of decrease.

V. Treatment Result
1. 1878 cases healed, which is 17.69% of total; 2452 cases were obvious effect, 23.09%; 3979 cases were effect, 37.47%; 23309 cases were no effect, 21.75%.

Among 1236 IDDM cases, 84 were cured, 6.8%; 106 obvious effect, 8.58%; 144 effect, 1165%; 902 no effect, 72.98%. 3046 NIDDM cases administered by sulfaurea medicine, 557 were cured, 18.29%; 736 obvious effect, 24.16%; 1478 effect, 48.52%; 275 no effect, 9.03. 2395 cases with Biguanide medicine, 575 were cured, 24.01%; 647 obvious effect, 27.01%; 936 effect, 39.08%; 237 no effect, 9.90%. 3198 cases combined with two kinds of medicines, 476 were cured, 14.88%; 748 obvious effect, 23.39%; 1109 effect, 34.68%; 865 no effect, 27.05%. 401 cases administered by other Chinese herbs, 96 were cured, 23.94%; 125 obvious effect. 31.17%; 166 effect, 41.4%; 14 no effect, 3.49%. 342 without use any medicine, 90 were cured, 26.32%; 90 obvious effect, 26.32%; 146 effect, 42.69%; 16 no effect, 4.68%.

5. IDDM: Among 136 cases who the daily dosage of Insulin is over 50 units, 5 were cured, 3.68%; 7 obvious effect, 5.15%; 8 effect, 5.88%; 116 no effect, 85.29%.

6. Changes of blood glucose, blood insulin and blood pancreatic glucagon. Blood glucose and pancreatic glucagon reduced significantly after the treatment. It proves "YU XIAO SAN 8805" can decrease blood glucose level obviously.

7. The changes of blood lipid and blood rheology. Cholesterol, triglyceride reduce clearly (p<0.001), Blood viscosity, plasma viscosity, PCV, hemomcyte electrophoresis time reduce greatly. (p<0.01), Blood sedimentation equation K go down significantly. (p<0.01), Fibrinogen decrease. It indicates blood viscosity low marvely.

VI CONCLUSION
The results of clinic and Lab (animal test) research indicates:
1. YU XIAO SAN 8805 can improve function of the pancreas, increase secretion of insulin and decrease blood glucose. Meanwhile, it can decrease blood lipid that is similar to the find in the Lab. Of the Stanford University for YU XIAO SAN 8805.
2. The effective rate of YU XIAO SAN 8805 for IDDM is 27.02%, in which 6.8% of patients who were followed for six months at least are no longer use insulin. 8.85% patients' function of the pancreas was improved with decreased dosage of insulin. 11.65% patients' symptoms had abated notably.
3. The effective rate of YU XIAO SAN 8805 for NIDDM is 85%. Among the 8639 patients who took western medicines, 1608 patients stopped using western medicine, 18.61% in the total; 2131 patients reduce the dosage of western medicine, 24.67%; 3523 patients' symptoms had abated, 40.78%. Therefore, YU XIAO SAN 8805 had effect on patients taking either Sulfured or Biguanide, even patients who failed to react to western medicines. It is clear to us that the mechanism of YU XIAO SAN is different from the western medicine.
4. YU XIAO SAN 8805 can improve symptoms for those who took western medicine (Sulfurea and Biguanide) without any effect. The effect was no relation with sex and age but time of the disease and degree of the complications.
5. YU XIAO SAN 8805 can increase ability of immunity. For patients having antibody for insulin and daily usage of insulin over 50 units, 33.68% patients were clinically cured, 5.15% patients decreased the dosage of insulin and 5.88% patients 'blood sugars were lower'. The mechanism of this phenomenon needs further study.
6. The effect of decreasing blood glucose and lipid of YU XIAO SAN 8805 is superior to other Chinese medicine that are currently use (for example, YU AUAN WAN is produced in BEI JING and SICHUAN). If patients took decoction prescribed by traditional Chinese theory based on YU XIAO SAN 8805 the effective rate reached to 95.96%. This is the symbol that YU XIAO SAN 8805 should improve on the form and extraction.
7. On observing clinic, it is clear that YU XIAO SAN 8805 reduced blood lipid, decreased blood viscosity, promoted blood circulation and abated and prevented symptoms of complications.
8. YU XIAO SAN 8805 can increase endurance for carbohydrate, improve assimilation of liver glycogen and catabolism of muscle glycogen. All of these become foundation to improve symptoms of the diabetes.
9. The bile is a necessary composition for forming insulin. YU XIAO SAN 8805 is composed of the herb which can stimulate the secretion of the bile, then the increase the composition for insulin is important during the course of reducing blood sugar.
10. During analysis of the YU XIAO SAN 8805, the trace elements had been found. The relation between trace elements and herbs should be considered.

VII DISCUSSION
YU XIAO SAN 8805 is composed of natural Chinese herbs. It is invented by famous diabetes expert CHONG LIAN JIN based on the theory of "organ regeneration" in traditional Chinese medicine and "embryogenesis" in western medicine.

The academic ideas of Dr. CHONG LIAN JIN are:
1. It is well know that the origin, degree and prolong of the diabetes are depend on the secretion status of the insulin and usage efficacy the insulin. At present, oral drugs for diabetes in clinic are either to increase secretion ability of insulin or to higher usage efficacy of the insulin while there are lack of the drug to combine the two functions in one. (Sometimes uses the two drugs together). YU XIAO SAN 8805 is just combining the two functions into one.

But over-stimulation will drive B cell exhaustion. In clinic many patients turn NIDDM to IDDM because the reason. Thus only through stimulating B cell is not proper way to correct blood sugar level. YU XIAO SAN 8805 is to improve functions of liver and duodenum in order to accelerate the metabolism of pancreatic tissue then activate living ability of B cells and B cells will increase the secretion automatically.

3. The secretion of the bile has the direct relation with the product of insulin owing to the bile which is the one of necessary composition for insulin synthesizing. This is a key factor but it is not fully used by pharmacists. In reference to the function of YU XIAO SAN 8805 is strengthened by the herbs that can stimulate the bile in order to meet the need of the insulin synthesizing.
4. To enhance tolerance of carbohydrate to the extreme extent is the important content for treatment and preventing diabetes. There s no perfect reliable western medicine in the whole field. YU XIAO SAN 8805 that has strong aimed herbs plays the advantage of Chinese medicine to enhance extensively the tolerance of carbohydrate provided the best recovery conditions for patients suffering from diabetes and helpful function for B cell activating and regeneration.
5. Pancreatic glucagon is recognized as an antagonist to insulin all the time. For decreasing hyperglycema and increasing secretion of insulin, moderating the abnormal antagonism of pancreatic glucagon is also a unnegligible method for treatment and preventing diabetes. Through the compound effect by YU XIUAO SAN 8805 patients' pancreatic glucagon is reduced and this result has not seen in other reports yet.
6. The assimilation of hepatic glycogen and catabolism of muscle glycogen are the very important aspect for treatment and preventing diabetes. The herbs of improving the functions contain a great Reito in the formula of YU XIAO SAN 8805.
7. The most herbs in the formula of YU XIAO SAN 8805 can upgrade the ability of immunity by reports from several Labs. For low ability of immunity of patients with diabetes especially the low sensitivity and vagueness of the target cells YU XIAO SAN 8805 has helpful and adjustment effect. It can not been denied patients with diabetes treated by YU XIAO SAN 8805 had stronger immunity along with decreasing blood sugar.
8. At least it can reduce the deterioration of complication in the kidney.
